Tampa Law Schools & Programs Eckerd College and the University of South Florida offer pre-law and criminology studies. Students in Hillsborough Community College's Criminal Justice Technology department can earn associate in science degrees that provide a good foundation for a number of careers in law enforcement and criminal justice. Southwest Florida College has paralegal education and criminal justice studies programs. The University of Tampa's criminology department excels in connecting students with practicing lawyers and law enforcement officials. Those wishing to pursue graduate studies can attend the Florida Metropolitan University Graduate School of Criminal Justice or Stetson University's College of Law.

Tampa has a number of large law firms, including Johnson, Pope, Bokor, Ruppel & Burns LLP, the area's biggest firm. Other large firms include Fowler White Boggs Baker, one of Florida's oldest law firms, and Holland & Knight. Tampa is also the home of several busy state agencies that employ a many legal professionals, including the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Middle District and the United States Attorney's Office, Middle District of Florida.

Almost 9,000 people are employed in legal professions in the Tampa area, including about 3,900 lawyers and 2,500 people in paralegal jobs. About 3,500 police and sheriff's officers and about 700 detectives are employed in Tampa. The annual growth rate for paralegal jobs is 3.18%, for police and sheriff's officers is 2.54%, and 2.11% for lawyers.
