First things first — let's look at those photography schools, starting with the University of South Florida. Students at USF learn the traditional practices of photography, and then learn to innovate to express their own creativity, not only in photography, but printmaking, digital imaging, and video as well. The University of Tampa stresses a student's photography expression through digital media, computer software, and other technologies. The International Academy of Design and Technology — Tampa puts classroom and darkroom learning together to help students uncover a career in photojournalism, fashion, or product photography.
Now on to the second part of the photography career formula — actual jobs. Tampa expects job growth through 2012 of 1.56% in the arts-related job market, with 2.17% in museums and other organizations of finer arts and 3.3% in the media industries. This is what might best be summed up as "holding steady," but with an estimated 500 full-time photography jobs in the area in 2004, that's a fine level to maintain.
